A small business owner in South Texas is being threatened with deportation after living in the United States for 25 years.
Federal authorities detained Juana Melendez following a recent hearing. Two of her children are currently serving in the U.S. military, and Melendez is seeking an immigration waiver that would allow her to stay in the U.S. legally. Her application was turned down in June, but she has submitted an appeal to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Democratic Congressman Vicente Gonzalez has sent a letter to ICE asking for additional time so Melendez can submit another application.
