The Edinburg Police Department says its drone as a first responder program has become fully operational. The department announced this week that it has completed the installation of two drone boxes that will allow a better relay of aerial footage to operators and commanders.

The program was started in May as a way to provide quicker response to emergencies like vehicle crashes, search and rescue operations and crimes in progress. The program made Edinburg the first city in the Rio Grande Valley to use drones to respond to real-time emergencies.
