A South Texas sheriff who is also the brother of Congressman Henry Cuellar has been indicted on federal fraud charges.

Webb County Sheriff Martin Cuellar appeared in court Thursday and pleaded not guilty. Investigators say Cuellar and two of his deputies operated a cleaning company that used county employees and supplies.

The company secured a 500-thousand-dollar contract to clean schools in Laredo during the COVID-19 pandemic. One deputy has already pleaded guilty to charges in the case. Cuellar is currently serving his fifth term as sheriff of Webb County.
