Bexar County commissioners are supporting an effort to improve medical services for inmates at the county jail.

Commissioners voted unanimously on Tuesday in favor of a plan to improve medical screening and monitoring of inmates’ health from the moment they’re booked into the jail. The vote comes almost three weeks after the seventh in-custody death of an inmate in 2026.

Some inmates have existing medical conditions when they’re locked up, but jail staff don’t always know about them until there’s a medical emergency.
