Researchers have, for the first time, used artificial intelligence to create a functioning synthetic virus.

The new research published in the journal Science says the Stanford-led team is hoping the technology will lead to medical benefits, like using AI-created viruses to kill E. coli and to fight drug-resistant bacteria.

Critics are concerned it could open the way to creating viruses that are difficult to stop or even new biological weapons.
