Hearings begin this week as attorneys for convicted murderer Karmelo Anthony seek a new trial and a different judge. Judge John Roach presided over Anthony’s murder trial in June. After Anthony’s conviction, the judge said he believed the trial was fair to both sides.

From the beginning, there was speculation about the possible influence of race on the case. Anthony, the killer, is black, and his victim, Austin Metcalf, was white. Anthony’s attorneys claim his civil rights were violated by tight restrictions on public access to the trial.
