Governor Greg Abbott is proposing a ban on the use of H-1B visas to hire foreign workers at Texas public schools.

Speaking at a news conference in Austin on Tuesday, the governor said the ban was part of an effort to eliminate “indoctrination in the classroom.” Abbott says he plans to propose legislation to forbid schools from accepting gifts or entering into partnerships with foreign governments.

Most of the H-1B visa holders in the state’s education sector work at universities, but some school districts use the visas to fill teacher shortages.
