Governor Greg Abbott is threatening to cut state funding to three major cities unless they change policies that limit police cooperation with federal immigration agents.
Houston, Austin, and Dallas all direct local police not to hold onto illegal immigrants detained in traffic stops and similar encounters in order to hand them over to ICE.
Abbott notified Houston on Monday that the state will withdraw about 110 million dollars in public safety grants if the city doesn’t repeal its ordinance. On Thursday, Abbott also warned Austin and Dallas of potential funding losses in the tens of millions of dollars.
