A Border Patrol agent is dead after taking action to save his children while they were swimming at South Padre Island. Thirty-eight-year-old Eric Cespedes died Friday afternoon.
Officials say Cespedes raced into the water after seeing that his children were caught in a rip current. Bystanders pulled the children to safety, while others began CPR in an attempt to save Cespedes. He died after he was taken to a local hospital.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection is planning a memorial service to honor Cespedes, who served in the Border Patrol for 17 years.
