South Texas Congressman Henry Cuellar is asking for a formal explanation of the weekend detention of a nun in McAllen. ICE agents detained Sister Letty Ugboaja on Sunday morning while she was walking to Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Church.
The Nigerian-born nun was reportedly wearing her habit when she was detained. The detention led Cuellar and Republican Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz to reach out to federal officials like Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin to get more details.
The nun was released on Sunday evening. Cuellar and De La Cruz both condemned the detention, saying ICE should focus on violent criminals rather than nuns on their way to church.
