By The first bridge to connect Port Isabel to South Padre Island no longer exists. Officials say the demolition of the old Queen Isabella Causeway was completed last week.
The old causeway opened in 1952, but was replaced in the 1970s after the rebar inside the structure rusted. Rubble from the demolition will be used by a nonprofit group to build an artificial reef near South Padre Island.
