Court documents are revealing more details about a pursuit that led to an arrest in Weslaco earlier this week. Border Patrol agents saw a raft crossing the Rio Grande River near Mercedes on Wednesday morning.
The people on the raft got into an SUV, which led to a pursuit when the driver refused to pull over for law enforcement. The chase ended at a shopping center in Weslaco, resulting in the arrest of five people who admitted to being in the U.S. illegally.
The driver, 34-year-old Cesar Rafael Leon of Indiana, reportedly admitted to investigators that he agreed to transport the people to pay off a drug debt. He’s facing multiple charges, including five counts of human smuggling.
