Fewer Texas babies are being born but far more moms are developing dangerous high blood pressure during pregnancy.
In a new state-by-state report released Wednesday, the CDC finds Texas cases rose 51 percent from 2016 to 2024, even as statewide births fell by two percent.
High blood pressure deprives developing babies of oxygen and nutrients, raising the risk of premature birth and low birth weight. It can also trigger strokes and severe medical complications for the mother. CDC researchers say rising obesity and diabetes may be helping drive the spike.
