Republican state leaders are taking steps to protect the redrawn congressional district map from legal challenges ahead of next year’s midterms.
The Texas Attorney General’s Office acknowledged in a court filing on Tuesday that the Justice Department’s directive to state officials to redraw the maps was heavy-handed. At the same time, the filing says the DOJ’s letter gave the Texas Legislature the green light to create district maps that would help the GOP win seats in the November 2026 midterms.
