A La Joya school district police officer is being recognized for helping save a choking infant. The school district praised Officer Ashley Melgarejo in a press release on Friday.

Melgarejo reportedly performed the infant Heimlich maneuver on the choking infant at a pickup area at La Joya High School. The action dislodged a quarter from the infant’s airway, allowing the baby to breathe again.

The school district called Melgarejo’s action heroic, saying it was a reminder that district police officers are always ready to ensure the safety and well-being of the entire school community.
