The recent detention of a family seeking asylum is drawing bipartisan condemnation from Rio Grande Valley lawmakers. ICE detained the Gamez-Cuellar family late last month and placed them in two different detention centers.
McAllen Republican Mayor Javiel Villalobos issued a statement supporting the family Sunday, saying he is an advocate for law enforcement and border security but cannot accept some current ICE policies.
Republican Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz said the Gamez-Cuellar story breaks her heart and that she is closely monitoring their situation. She has also requested a visit to the detention center in Raymondville where 18-year-old Antonio Gamez-Cuellar is currently being held.
Democratic Congressman Vicente Gonzalez called on all members of the South Texas congressional delegation to fight to keep the family together.
