Paper license plates no longer exist in Texas as of this week. Governor Greg Abbott signed a bill just over two years ago that requires licensed car dealers to issue metal license plates to buyers at the time of sale.
The law went into effect on Tuesday. Temporary tags will no longer be available. Phony paper tags have been used to bypass toll payments, to conceal uninsured or unsafe vehicles, and to hinder police efforts to find vehicles and suspects involved in criminal activities.
