Health officials are warning about a surge of a type of norovirus that’s hitting parts of the US earlier than usual this year, including Texas. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says norovirus activity has been on the rise since mid-October, even though it usually doesn’t start until winter.

Norovirus, or stomach flu, spreads through contaminated food, water, and surfaces, or by direct contact. In addition to Texas, this year’s early outbreaks are reported in Louisiana, California, Michigan, Indiana, Alabama, and Florida.
