Starting April 1st, SNAP recipients in Texas will no longer be able to buy candy or sweetened drinks with their Lone Star Cards.

The Texas Health and Human Services Commission says the federal government approved a waiver last year to prohibit the purchases. The state legislature passed a bill including the ban, which Governor Greg Abbott signed into law.

Abbott issued a statement praising the move, and claiming that “Texas is leading the way in aligning SNAP benefits with healthier food options.”
