State animal inspectors are trying to stop a parasite that affects cattle from entering the United States. Staff members from the Texas Animal Health Commission conducted inspections of cattle trailers on Highway 281 south of Falfurrias Tuesday.
Inspectors are trying to find cattle that may have been infected by the New World Screwworm. The parasite has been identified in hundreds of cases in southern Mexico, and was recently spotted about 70 miles from the U.S. border. Officials say the inspections are meant to stop the invasive pests from spreading to the rest of Texas.
