The Department of Homeland Security plans to enhance border security by placing large buoys along more than 500 miles of the Rio Grande.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem announced the plan on Wednesday while visiting the Rio Grande Valley. Noem discussed the border situation with local ranchers and Border Patrol agents. She said 130 miles of buoys are already under contract and are being installed.
The plan builds on Governor Greg Abbott’s 2023 order to install a couple of thousand feet of water barrier near Eagle Pass.
