The Texas Department of Transportation is considering two possible routes for a new causeway to South Padre Island.

TxDOT staff members talked about the possibility of building a second connector to the island during a meeting Thursday at the South Padre Island Convention Center.

Plans call for an approximately eight-mile-long, four-lane causeway across the Laguna Madre and through part of the Laguna Atascosa Wildlife Refuge.

The project could cost up to a billion dollars, and construction would take five to six years. TxDOT is currently conducting an environmental study to determine the impact of the proposed project.
