The Texas Department of Transportation says San Antonio won’t be allowed to leave the city’s rainbow crosswalks in place. Governor Greg Abbott directed TxDOT in October to enforce the removal from Texas streets of all non-standard surface markings, signs and signals that have nothing to do with traffic safety but represent “political ideologies.”

City officials filed a request for an exemption last month for the crosswalks at North Main Avenue and East Evergreen Street. TxDOT refused, and the city has until January 15th to comply.
