The state of Texas is threatening to pull public safety grants from Houston over a new ordinance limiting when Houston police can call ICE.
A letter to Mayor John Whitmire from Governor Greg Abbott’s office on Monday says the ordinance violates a 2025 arrangement between the city and the Public Safety Office of the Governor.
The city agreed to cooperate with the Department of Homeland Security by detaining illegal immigrants as requested by DHS. At stake is 110 million dollars in state public safety funds.
