Cochliomyia hominivorax, the New World screw-worm fly, or screw-worm for short, is a species of parasitic fly that is well known for the way in which its larvae (maggots) eat the living tissue. (Shutterstock)

Construction is starting on an Edinburg facility that will help fight the spread of the New World screwworm. USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins joined Senator John Cornyn and Congresswoman Monica De La Cruz for a groundbreaking ceremony at Moore Air Base on Friday.

Rollins said the facility will produce 100 million sterile screwworm flies when it is completed late next year. The facility will produce around 300 million flies by the end of 2028.
