A new report says Texas public schools have about 76 thousand fewer students enrolled this year, for the first non-pandemic decline in nearly 40 years.
A policy research group says the state’s public schools may have around 100 thousand fewer students by the end of the 2020s. Hispanic students made up just over 80 percent of this year’s enrollment drop.
In addition, Texas families are generally having fewer children, and more families are home schooling their kids or enrolling them in private schools.
