The U.S. Department of Agriculture is confirming 26 cases of New World screwworm in Texas. The infestations are concentrated in counties in the southwestern part of the state.
Crockett and Edward Counties have six active cases each, Terrell County has four active cases and seven other counties have fewer active and inactive cases.
The parasitic fly poses a threat to the state’s cattle industry, which generates 41 billion dollars a year. State and federal authorities are using quarantines and other measures to prevent the spread.
