A former Republican state senator will be the state comptroller for the rest of the year, after Kelly Hancock steps down at the end of July.

Governor Greg Abbott appointed Don Huffines to the position on Thursday. Hancock submitted his resignation on Wednesday.

Huffines is in the running to serve a full term after defeating Hancock in the GOP primary in March. He will face Democratic state Senator Sarah Eckhardt in the November general election.
