Cochliomyia hominivorax, the New World screw-worm fly, or screw-worm for short, is a species of parasitic fly that is well known for the way in which its larvae (maggots) eat the living tissue. (Shutterstock)

Starr County Judge Eloy Vera has declared an emergency after a confirmed case of the New World Screwworm.

The parasite was recently discovered in a calf on the northwestern side of the county. Vera signed a disaster declaration yesterday so the county can expedite the delivery of medicine, equipment and materials ranchers may need to stop the spread of the screwworm.

The county is also working on getting an on-call veterinarian who can respond to questions and personally assist ranchers with any future cases.
