Cameron County Public Health is trying to reduce the potential for mosquito-borne illness following several days of heavy rain.

The agency is handing out free mosquito repellent during normal business hours at its San Benito Annex. Each household is limited to one can of repellent while supplies last.

Cameron County and the City of Weslaco have also begun spraying operations to cut down on mosquitoes, and residents are being urged to eliminate standing water wherever possible.
