Houston city leaders are trying to figure out how to get recycling services back on schedule. In a recent City Council meeting, Interim Solid Waste Director Larius Hassen said he’s dealing with worker shortages, aging equipment, and rats chewing the wiring out of recycling trucks.
Hassen said only a handful of the recycling fleet of 218 trucks are fully operational. Mayor John Whitmire called it “unacceptable” that a city the size of Houston has one recycling drop-off center.
