A years-long campaign to end child marriage in California is one step closer to its goal. State lawmakers have approved legislation that sets 18 as the minimum age to marry, with no exceptions. Under current law, minors can marry with parental consent and court approval.
The bill now goes to Governor Gavin Newsom after clearing the Assembly. The State Senate had already approved the measure unanimously. California is one of three states without a statutory minimum marriage age.
