The Progreso school district is remembering a young man who drowned in a canal last weekend. A drive-by memorial and barbecue chicken fundraiser for Samuel Hernandez was held at Progreso High School Thursday.

The 17-year-old dove into a canal in North Mercedes on Sunday to free a fishing line and was unable to swim to safety.

Organizers say about 15-hundred plates of food were sold during the fundraiser, with all proceeds going to the Hernandez family.
