Rio Grande Valley leaders are promoting watchfulness as the New World screwworm gets closer to the area.
The judges of Cameron, Hidalgo, Willacy and Starr counties discussed the situation during a meeting in Weslaco yesterday. They urged pet and livestock owners to monitor their animals for infected open wounds that attract the screwworm fly.
Wounds that don’t heal, smell bad or show signs of larvae inside should be treated by a veterinarian immediately. Officials say it’s important to stop the screwworm fly at the border before it has a chance to spread deeper into Texas.
