Texas Senator Brian Birdwell is returning to the Pentagon to serve as an assistant secretary of defense.

The U.S. Senate confirmed Birdwell to the position on Monday by a 46-43 vote. The five-term Granbury Republican previously worked as an aide for the Department of the Army at the Pentagon, where he was injured during 9-11 terrorist attacks.

Birdwell announced last year that he’s not seeking reelection to Senate District 22 in North Texas, where he’s served since 2010.
