A huge announcement late last week on a potential new – private sector funded -desalination project that would purify gulf water.

US Desalination and IDE Technologies announced the formation of RGV-Desal LLC, a joint venture that aims at building a large desalination plant north of the city of South Padre Island.

The initial goal would be to produce 50 million gallons per day.  A representative with IDE told KURV the facility could one day ramp up to produce 100 million gallons per day.

The fast arrival of new, thirsty industry is providing a potential clientele base for the joint private venture.  Municipal use of the water is also possible.

Once IDE clears regulatory hurdles, the project might be up and running in about 5 years
