By Endangered Houston toads are breeding again at two Central Texas sites where they had nearly vanished. Texas Parks and Wildlife and the Houston Zoo have confirmed adult populations at Bastrop State Park and Griffith League Ranch for the first time in nearly a decade.
The toad disappeared from Houston in 1975, while habitat loss, drought and the 2011 Bastrop wildfire damaged its remaining local range.
The milestone follows the release of one-and-a-half million captive-bred eggs this year. Scientists still do not know if the wild populations can survive without continued releases.
