Two South Texas hospitals are under formal state investigation over alleged birth tourism schemes.

AG Ken Paxton launched an investigation Wednesday into Mission Regional Medical Center in Mission and Knapp Medical Center in Weslaco. It comes after billboards near the Mexican border promoted childbirth packages under a campaign called “Have My Baby in Texas.”

Paxton says the ads may have promoted illegal birth tourism, while Mission Regional says they advertised legal medical care and that Knapp did not take part. No findings or charges have been announced.
