Harris County Commissioners Court is scheduled to vote on a proposed eight-percent property tax hike. The proposed increase is part of an effort to deal with a budget shortfall estimated at 180 million dollars.

Republican Commissioner Tom Ramsey criticized the proposed tax hike at a news conference on Thursday. Ramsey said the focus instead should be on reducing administrative expenses, eliminating programs he doesn’t consider core county priorities, and cutting the salaries of highly paid county employees.
