The state’s top financial officer is asking lawmakers to double the funding for the private school voucher program to more than two billion dollars.

As part of the 2028-29 appropriations request, Texas Comptroller Don Huffines asked the Legislature to increase the program’s base funding by a billion dollars to cover the costs of private school or home schooling for more families.

The Legislature approved a billion dollars for last year’s rollout and for 2026-27, the first school year of the program.
