Eight people are dead after a small plane crashed in southwest Alaska. The U.S. military says a Cessna 441 with eight people on board left Anchorage Thursday afternoon and was headed to a remote military radar site when it crashed near the airstrip at Cape Newenham.

Alaskan Command says all eight people were killed. Details were not released about the victims, but an Air Force commander called them “dedicated professionals carrying out a vital mission in a demanding environment.”

The Cape Newenham radar site is part of a network of remote radar sites that monitor aircraft in Alaska’s airspace.
