The Congressional Budget Office says a “golden dome” missile defense system will cost the U.S. over a trillion dollars.

The nonpartisan office released a 12-page report on Tuesday estimating a cost of about one-point-two-trillion dollars over the next 20 years to develop and deploy a defense system that would protect the U.S. from incoming missiles.

The report says the majority of the costs would be for developing a space-based interceptor defense system capable of destroying aerial threats mid-flight.
