The City of Pharr is being criticized for adopting a new mandate for fiber optic internet service.

Pharr commissioners recently approved a measure that requires fiber optic infrastructure in future subdivisions. AT&T says the new rule gives the city’s existing fiber optic system an advantage and discourages private investment. Charter Communications has also been critical of the new mandate.

The city says it just wants to ensure consistent and reliable internet access for all residents.
