A South Texas student has made it through the preliminary rounds of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. McAllen sixth-grader Anirudh Roy was one of 95 spellers who advanced to the quarterfinals yesterday.
The 12-year-old Resaca Middle School student properly spelled the word aceituna [[ ah-say-TOO-nah ]], correctly answered the question “What is a sconce,” and met the qualifying score on a written spelling test.
The quarterfinal and semifinal rounds will be held today in Washington, DC.
