The Supreme Court will hear arguments today over the Trump administration’s attempts to scale back legal protections for noncitizens.
The Temporary Protected Status program was started in 1990 to allow foreigners into the U.S. who can’t safely return to their own countries because of war, natural disaster or other extreme circumstances. Currently 17 nations are on the list.
The administration has tried to cancel the status of 13 and the others will soon expire. The administration argues that courts don’t have the authority to prevent the President from ending those protections. A decision is expected by the end of June.
