By Texas tops the nation in power shutoffs because of unpaid bills. A first-of-its kind federal report finds the Lone Star State had more than three million electricity disconnections in 2024.
Florida, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and California were next on the list, in that order. In all, more than 13 million U.S. households had their power shut off in 2024. Consumer advocates claim the figures come at a time when the utility industry is recording record profits.
