A candidate for mayor in Mission says there’s a political reason the city enacted a moratorium on new car washes last month.

Rick Salinas filed a federal lawsuit against the city and Mayor Norie Garza Gonzalez last week. Salinas claims the 180-day suspension on new car wash applications was imposed because he’s running for mayor against Gonzalez.

Salinas is not planning to build a car wash, but his company is selling land to someone who is. The city and the mayor have both declined to comment on the lawsuit.
