Storms causing the biggest insurance losses are changing and Texas is at the center of it. Climate risk firm “First Street” says severe thunderstorms now cause more insured losses worldwide than hurricanes, with Texas facing more economic exposure to damaging hail than anywhere else on Earth.

Property data firm Cotality estimates roughly eight million Texas properties face at least moderate hail risk, with Dallas and Houston ranking among the top three most-exposed metros nationwide.

To offset mounting losses, major insurance carriers across Texas are aggressively raising monthly premiums and hiking out-of-pocket roof deductibles.
