South Texas high schools will have to abide by new heat safety rules when practices for the upcoming school year begin.

The University Scholastic League has mandated a series of heat safety guidelines to prevent students from overheating during football, marching band and other practices.

Schools will be required to use the West Bulb Globe Temperature metric to determine if students may be at risk for heat stroke. The new guidelines go into effect on Saturday.
