A suspension of avocado inspections in one Mexican state could soon lead to a drop in imports through a South Texas port of entry. The USDA has suspended inspections in Michoacan state as a safety measure due to an extortion investigation.
The operation is reportedly targeting cartel extortion in an area that grows much of the Mexican avocado crop. That could affect imports at the Pharr International Bridge, where 70 percent of all Mexican avocados enter the U.S. Mexican authorities are reportedly working with the U.S. Embassy to resume the inspections.
